Can You Drink Water From a Dehumidifier?

Wanting to find ways to save water is admirable and recommended – we should all strive to look for ways to save precious resources such as water. And, fortunately, there are some ways to use the water from your dehumidifier to your advantage. Drinking dehumidifier water is NOT one of them, however.

Can you drink water from a dehumidifier?

If you live in a particularly damp area your dehumidifier is likely gathering water from the air’s moisture pretty quickly. However, you should NOT drink that water. The reason is that it’s almost certainly full of too many pollutants that are not safe to drink.

The fact that you can safely breathe your home’s air doesn’t mean that the water from your dehumidifier is safe to drink. Stagnant condensate harbors even more biological contaminants than water, including mold, mildew, and algae as the Environmental Protection Agency points out.

Not to mention that your home’s air might not be as safe as you think – that’s one of the main functions of a dehumidifier, after all, not just to remove moisture from the air but to remove all the pollutants that come with that moisture.

So, is dehumidifier water safe to drink? The quick, short, and categorical answer here is – don’t drink the water from your dehumidifier. But here are several more questions you might be wondering about:

Is dehumidifier water distilled?

Not at all.

How to make dehumidifier water drinkable?

This depends entirely on what the water is contaminated with. If you’re sure that the air that’s been dehumidified is 100% safe then simply distilling the water by boiling it can be enough. To err on the safer side and to remove any dust particles you can also pass the water through a disposable paper coffee filter.

If there’s any risk of additional contaminants in the air, however, it’s easier and much simpler to just not drink the water at all.

What can you do with dehumidifier water?

The most common thing you can do is to use it to water indoor or outdoor plants. Or, you can use distilled (boiled) dehumidifier water for some special fabric washing.
